DOHA, Qatar (AP) — An unprecedented gathering of top Palestinian politicians and academics this week suggested that the split between Islamists and secular nationalists has hardened into permanence.
Bangui (Central African Republic) (AFP) - Aid workers warned Thursday of a looming humanitarian crisis in the Central African capital as tens of thousands of residents desperate for protection slept rough near a French army base in Bangui. Sectarian unrest that claimed at least 400 lives in Bangui last week has abated after the start of a French-backed military intervention, but many traumatised residents still feared returning to their homes as sporadic acts of violence continued to take place. The resource-rich but impoverished majority Christian country was plunged into chaos following a March coup by mainly Muslim Seleka rebels, prompting France to deploy 1,600 troops to its former colony last week to prop up an African peacekeeping force and start disarming fighters. Some 100,000 of Bangui's estimated 800,000 residents had been displaced within the city, workers said, with many desperate for protection living rough near a French military base and in other areas considered safer.
MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin cast Russia Thursday as a defender of conservative values against the "genderless and infertile" Western tolerance that he said equates good and evil.
GENEVA (AP) — The global airline industry expects its profits to jump to a record high next year, helped by falling jet fuel prices, rising travel demand and cost-cutting.
PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — Nelson Mandela is gone, but many mourners waiting patiently for a chance to see Mandela for a last time on Thursday said they retain high hopes about South Africa's future. If the heady optimism of the days when South Africa's peaceful transformation to an all-race democracy in the 1994 elections has been diminished by time and economic challenges, many still believe the years ahead can be fruitful, with growing opportunity.
